Sound-Savvy's Best of 2008

Posted by Mack of Sound-Savvy On 10:30 AM

Alrighty folks, it's taken a while to compile this list, and this is one we definitely need everyone's feedback on so BE SURE TO COMMENT! Sound-Savvy has compiled a list of categories for it's Best of 2008 list. Each list is comprised of some of the most popular choices in each category, but we'd like to know what YOU think! Be sure to leave a comment with your picks or any you'd like to see added to the list. To hear who made Sound-Savvy's final cut, listen to the Sound-Savvy Report on Mindstream Radio Wednesday night from 8-10PM by clicking here. Note: Kanye West's album 808s N' Heartbreak is listed in the Pop/Alternative category. I didn't put it in the category with hip-hop albums because I don't classify it as a hip-hop album. More than half of the album focuses on adherence to melody, so it's more r&B/pop/alternative than hip-hop. Hope that helps!

  1. A. Red Said,

Great minds think alike. I'm doing a post similar to this on Wednesday. LOL

Best Remix- Love in this club. I wasn't a fan of this song until the Remix actually. Beyonce and Wayne took this joint to another level. THANK GOD for Beyonce not over-singing.

Hip Hop Album-NO KANYE? BLASPHEMY!!!...Lil Wayne gets it then.

Hip Hop single- A Milli. Bangledash SNAPPED on this beat and everybody and their moms jumped on it to freestyle. The clubs still go nuts when this come on.

R&B Single-JAZMINE SULLIVAN OF COURSE. Man she shut the game DOWN with this one. I think she was one of the most anticipated artist of 08. She brought a fresh sound to R&B...and she could actually SANG. You don't see that much these days.

Male R&B Album- Day 26. Hands down...you can listen to this album from beginning to end. This is one my favorite albums period.

Most Underrated-I'm torn between Dwele and Lloyd. I really don't know.

Female R&B Album-Jazmine Sullivan. Her album is off the chain... and it's also the only album I've heard from beginning to end in this category. lol

Best new female artist-Jazmine Sullivan. J. Hud been out for a while, Estelle is good but on Jazmine level.

Best new male artist-Day 26. I think Brutha will bring a little competition to them though because those boys can sang as well.

  2. Kimesha Said,

Best Remix - Put On (Remix)

Hip Hop Album - Q-Tip - The Renaissance

Hip Hop Single - Lupe Fiasco - Paris, Tokyo

RNB/Pop Single - Neyo- Miss Independent

Male RNB/Soul Album - Neyo -Year of the Gentleman

    Most underrated - Anthony David!

Female RNB/Soul Album - She is not in your list of categories but SOLANGE - SolAngel and the Hadley Street Dreams. Her was the best this year.

Pop/Alternative Album - I have a tie with Sara Bareilles and Kanye. I can't stop listening to both of them.

Best new Female Artist - Estelle

Best New Male Artist - Even though he isn't new, I will pick Anthony David in ANY category. He desrves it!

    R&B/Pop Single
    Kanye West – Love Lockdown

    Male R&B/Soul Album
Ne-yo – Year of the Gentleman (this was a tough one)

    Most Underrated
Dwele - Sketches of A Man (Dwele stays underrated)

    Female R&B/Soul Album
Jazmine Sullivan – Fearless (won over Brandy by a small margin)

    Pop/Alternative Album
(as much as I abhor this album) Kanye West – 808’s N’ Heartbreaks

  5. Aiight Fashion Citizen is here to weigh in lol

Best Remix - I'll have to go with BShep, all those songs are kinda blah

Hip Hop Album - I'd go with T.I. because I dug it longer than the flash in the pan that was the Carter III. (I notice Kanye's release isn't there Mack, hating are we? LOL)

Hip Hop Single - Live Your Life, speaks volumes but Paris, Tokyo is a good jam as well.

R&B/Pop Single - Take A Bow, Rihanna did her thing for ALL of 2008.

Male R&B/Soul Album - I haven't heard most of the ones listed so I can't comment.

Most Underrated - Janelle Monae, I love her whole style and I think Michelle Williams deserves to be put on too, just don't know how I'd market her.

Female R&B/Soul Album - I've got a few, B-Rocka, Jazmine Sullivan and Beyonce. J-Hud gets honorable mention.

Pop/Alternative Album - Pink, Ye, Janet, N.E.R.D. and DK. My top two would be Ye and N.E.R.D.

Best New Female Artist - Estelle, Jazmine and Jennifer all win it for me

Best New Male Artist - Yawn....I thought you'd put that Archuletta fella on here, I'll go with a write-in and say Chester French.

  6. Ok, here are my picks, I'm hoping that I'm not too wordy, lol:

    BEST REMIX:

All of those are pretty mediocre. I would omit the "Can't Believe It Remix" along with that embarrassing "Bust It Baby Part III".

In their places should be the "Lollipop" remix with Yeezy and Lil Wayne along with, and please forgive me if I have my timeline off, but the "Flashing Lights" remix by R. Kelly. I would also add the "Everyone Nose" remix from Seeing Sounds.

In the end, I think the winner would be the "Lollipop" remix.

    HIP HOP ALBUM:

Q-Tip- The Renaissance is the clear winner here. I might've replaced Paper Trail by T.I. with Rising Down by The Roots though.

    HIP-HOP SINGLE:

"I Can't Believe It" and "Something's Gonna Have To Give" should come off and be replaced by The Game's "My Life" and Jay Z's "Swagger Like Us".

This is a tough category though, so I'd give it a tie between "Paris, Tokyo", "Swagger Like Us", and "A Milli".

    R&B/POP SINGLE:

Ah, I feel like these categories shouldn't be mixed, lol.

First of all, Rihanna shouldn't be up for "Take A Bow", but for "Disturbia". I know I should be bashed for this, but if we're talking about pop, Brittney should be included for "Womanizer".

But the absolute winner is..."Single Ladies(Put A Ring On It)...I mean, perfect mix of pop, r&b, and funk.

    MALE R&B/SOUL ALBUM:

Day 26 and Here I Stand...WHAT?!?!? Where is Raphael Saadiq's The Way I See It and Anthony Hamilton's The Point of It All???

In the end, I'd give it to Ne-yo's Year of the Gentleman. One of the best of the year.

    MOST UNDERRATED:

Sol-Angel & the Hadley St. Dreams! That album was fire, 100%. I'd throw Seeing Sounds on there also. N.E.R.D. has yet to receive the accolades they deserve. But Solange did it this year.

    FEMALE R&B/SOUL ALBUM:

Ok, I Am...Sasha Fierce needs to be taken off ASAP. In comparison to the others on the list, that album is rubbish. Keyshia Cole's A Different Me should be added, and hence, own that category. That was a beautiful album.

    POP/ALTERNATIVE ALBUM:

Get Sarah Bareilles' Little Voice, Maroon 5's album and that awful, awful Discipline outta there.

If we're talking Alternative, then Radiohead's In Rainbows should be on the list, and please, please put Solange's album on there.

I'm torn here, but I'd give it to Solange, followed by Seeing Sounds and In Rainbows.

    BEST NEW FEMALE ARTIST:

Adele should be one here, but I'd give it to J-Hud, her voice is still amazing. Followed by Estelle.

    BEST NEW MALE ARTIST:

Donnie Klang, huh? Must've been a slow year for up and coming male artists. I'd give it to Anthony David.

I know this is too long, so I'm going to get my opinionated ass off of here now.
