Michael Jackson’s Memorial Service Nominated For An NAACP Image Award? CMON SON!!

As if the world didn’t make enough of a spectacle about this man’s life and death, the NAACP takes it one tasteless step further and nominates Michael Jackson’s funeral for an IMAGE AWARD? According to the NAACP Image Awards website, Michael Jackson’s Memorial service is nominated in the category of Outstanding Variety – (Series or Special). Other nominees in the category include the BET Awards 09, Wanda Sykes: I’ma Be Me, We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial, and Bill Cosby: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Since when is a man’s funeral a competition to win an award?? Performances or not, I find this tasteless, insensitive and downright degrading to the memory of the King of Pop. Am I wrong?? Is it not tasteless to nominate a FUNERAL SERVICE FOR AN AWARD? What are your thoughts on this?

  1. Stop it guys. This is an embarrassment. I don’t care how many people watched it or how much organization it took to pull off. The bottom line is that it was a memorial service and not a variety show. I’ve traveled the world and had to fight against the image that hip-hop and movies put out about Black men. How is the person sitting in Singapore with no Black friends going to judge us if the only examples they have is television and the knowledge that our own body for “advancement” thinks a funeral should win an award?

  2. I totally agree with John. It was seen by more than 1 billion people worldwide. I took off from work to be apart of this last farewell to the King of Pop. It was a beautiful.

  3. As sad as it was that this was a memorial service, it was also a television production. There was a director, script, teleprompter, rehearsal, performances, clips, and all the very same things that go into putting on a television special. A seasoned production team had to pull this together in just 4 days and for that I think they deserve the recognition in honor of Michael.
